Unconditional Love

I’ve been reading Christian Atheist by Craig Groeschel. I’m, not quite half way through but so far I’m a fan. He makes some wonderful points, and hits home on a lot of behaviors. One quote that really stuck out to me was,

“There is nothing you can do to make God love you more. And there is nothing you can do to make Gods love you less. Love is not something God does. It is who God is. And because of who He is, God loves you. Period.” (Emphasis mine.)

Love is who God is. There is nothing we can do to make God love us more or less. We can’t earn any more of His love, and we can’t lose any either.

Until I read this, I didn’t realize I believed the lie that I could earn more of God’s love-whether that was by serving someone, reading/ memorizing Scripture, or praying. While those things are good, God doesn’t require us to do any of them in order to be loved by Him. The only way we can receive His love is to believe in His sacrifice. When we do that, we are forgiven and loved unconditionally by Him.

Have you ever really thought about what it means to love unconditionally? When you love someone unconditionally it means that you love him or her despite their flaws. Despite their faults. Despite their stubbornness. Despite their unfaithfulness. Despite their anger towards you. Despite their frustrations. Despite their distrust. Despite their faithlessness. Despite their every, and anything that might make you [with just cause I might add] not love them, yet you love them regardless. Unconditional means no matter what they do, you love them, your love doesn’t waiver. To love someone unconditionally means that you love them exactly as they are, how they were before, and how they will be in the future. People change all of the time, to love unconditionally means you’ll love them even if they become something you disagree with. You can’t stop loving them, because you have given them your entire heart already. There’s no going back in that kind of commitment. There’s no changing your mind when things get tough. Because frankly, there’s no life without them, and if you stopped loving them, even the tiniest bit, part of your heart would be cut away and you simply can’t live without every part of your heart.

That’s the kind of love God has for us. He can’t love us any more or less because He has already given us everything…He’s given us His heart…His very self…His Son. (*disclaimer; when I say He can’t I am not limiting God’s power. I am simply trying to get your mind around the magnitude of His love for us.)

God loves us, He gave His own Son, His own self so that we can be with Him for all eternity. He is jealous for us, He is jealous for our thoughts, and love. Give Him your all, your whole heart. He’s already given you His, and there’s no gaining or losing love from Him, so why not go all in yourself? There’s no losing in this type of bet, there’s only winnings. There’s only a life well worth living, so go for it, dive in.

Have you ever caught yourself believing the lie that you can earn or lose God’s love? Are you holding back from giving Him your whole heart? Go ahead, go all in and take a risk. Who knows, you might just discover a pleasant surprise.
